Error messages

If a layer doesn't load correctly for whatever reasons there might be, the layer will have a red mnemonic with a white cross as the below screenshot shows.  

When you right click and choose Properties, the first tab of the property dialog will show the error message.

In this case I was trying to load a DM file but specified that I had not put the correct spelling in the file, so this is a typical error message that you could get.
